Does it just blow like a normal household bulb or do you gradually lose picture and colour quality?

Is it worth it, is it possible, or should I just go get a new monitor?
It died on me last night, and I had it looked at this morning and I was told it's the bulb.

I was shoping around and realized the life on the bulbs in the details is fairly short. A tv with a "60,000" hr life bulb would burn out in about a year if used 8 hours a day on average!!!
I haven't bought a TV yet, but I was going back and fouth between plasma. I figured an LCD would be a better, LONGER investment than a plasma!
